Piyush Goyal, the Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, announced that India is on track to become the third-largest economy globally by 2027 and aims to achieve a $5 trillion economy within the next three years. He expressed confidence in reaching this significant economic milestone soon.
During a recent webinar organized by the Merchants' Chamber of Commerce & Industry (MCCI) titled 'India's March Towards a $5 Trillion Economy: Navigating Global Challenges,' Goyal emphasized the collective effort required from all sectors, including the government, business community, and the 1.4 billion citizens, to align with the Prime Minister's vision for a developed India by 2047.
India's Global Standing
Goyal highlighted India's ability to protect its interests in sensitive matters and secure advantages in sectors where it can compete effectively on a global scale. He noted that India's international reputation is at an unprecedented high, stating, 'The Indian passport today symbolizes safety and security,' referencing 'Operation Sindoor' as a testament to the government's commitment to safeguarding Indian citizens abroad.
Focus on Sustainable Growth
The Minister remarked that the current government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is committed to transformative change rather than mere incremental improvements, focusing on inclusive and sustainable growth.
Goyal asserted, 'History teaches us that significant economies are forged in challenging times,' urging India to capitalize on the current opportunities without hesitation. He pointed out that India has transitioned from being part of the 'fragile five' to ranking among the world's top five economies.

'We possess a solid macroeconomic foundation,' Goyal stated, praising the strength of the banking system and the low inflation rate, which has recently dropped to 3%. He concluded by emphasizing the aspirations of 1.4 billion young Indians striving for a better quality of life, assuring that the government is dedicated to supporting them through strong leadership and a resilient economy.
The Minister reiterated that the government is focused on growth tailored to India's unique narrative, emphasizing principles of service, good governance, and innovation. He acknowledged MCCI's crucial role during this transformative period, stating that such discussions are vital for understanding industry needs amidst global uncertainties.

Goyal commended MCCI's 124-year legacy, describing it as a vital link between the government and industry stakeholders. He remarked, 'MCCI can be seen as a facilitator of commerce and a connector of industries, which is precisely its function.'
